Native Americans were being moved off land deemed valuable by settlers east of the Mississippi River.
In 1830, the Congress passed and President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act.
Native American tribes resisted this forced removal in a variety of ways.
Of the Native American removal east of the Mississippi River, the most famous was the Five Civilized Tribes in what is now known as the Trail of Tears.
