Rivers
A river is a natural flowing watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, sea, lake or another river. Humans use them for drinking, travel, sanitation, irrigation, power, recreation. Animals use them for drinking. Plants use them to sustain life.
Most of Oklahoma's rivers are slow moving due to the relatively flat terrain. Most of the water in these rivers comes from snow pack melting in the Rocky Mountains to the west. Storms over the Great Plains can also add to the water flow of the rivers. This often causes silt to build up. Flooding occurs when there is not enough depth in the river to handle high rain accumulations and uneven snow pack melting.
Humans in the area of Oklahoma have used these rivers for many purposes.
While several major rivers flow through Oklahoma, there use as major waterways was limited by the deposit of silt after winter runoff in the Rocky Mountains and melting snows in the plains.
