In a direct primary, voters choose a party's candidate in a preliminary election
Initiative petitions are citizen-generated ballot questions which, if passed majority vote, have the force of law, the same as if the state legislature passed them.
A referendum is a direct vote in which an entire electorate is asked to vote on a particular proposal.
A recall is a procedure by which voters can remove an elected official from office through a direct vote before his or her term has ended.
