Socialism in the United States began with utopian communities in the early 19th century such as the Shakers, the activist visionary Josiah Warren and intentional communities inspired on Charles Fourier.
In the first two decades of the twentieth century the Socialist Party of Oklahoma consistently ranked as one of the top three state socialist organizations in America.
From the outset, Oklahoma socialism had a decidedly agrarian focus.
The Socialist Party, with its clear cut and under- standable discussion of the class struggle and its appli- cation of the same to conditions in Oklahoma, is rap- idly becoming the political expression of the dispossessed class.
